I love this picture of my younger brother. It captures who he was at age four. His mischievous nature shows in his eyes and smile as he opens the door to Emmanuel’s green VW bug, dressed to the nines down to his suede, white Bucks. Last month he celebrated his birthday and it’s hard to imagine that this beautiful green-eyed toddler is now 50 years old.
Jonathan and I have had to overcome some challenges in our relationship—we didn’t always see eye to eye when it came to our parents or even some of the more difficult family relationships. But what I am most proud of; is the slow but sure development of open and honest communication, which has fostered our relationship through the years. It’s a testament to honesty, vulnerability and open-mindedness when discussing situations from the past, viewed from many different perspectives. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s definitely worth it—I never thought I would be able to be as open as I am with Jonathan today.
I wish I could say the same thing for so much of what is happening in our country today. If only we could all see each other with honesty, vulnerability and open-mindedness; there would be a lot less vitriol and anger.
Happy Birthday Jonathan! You always make me laugh with your droll and absurd sense of humor!
